Voyage ATL – Meet Yvonne Dwyer of Med-Hire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Dwyer.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been a successful medical and dental recruiter since 1998. I went to a staffing agency to meet a recruiter to interview for a position in a dental office. In the middle of the interview, the recruiter asked me, “have you ever thought about working as a recruiter?” I remember laughing a bit and replied, no, it’s never crossed my mind. I have a diverse background in healthcare and dentistry.

We finished the interview and at the end, she told me I was an excellent candidate for the job at the dental office. She then proceeded to explain what a day in the life of a recruiter consisted of. Well, it peaked my interest and two interviews later I started my career as a medical and dental recruiter.

Fast forward 17 years. I only worked for 2 staffing agencies and started feeling like it was time to make a change. A long frustrating commute coupled with internal challenges within the agency lead me to the decision to leave the agency where I spent 11 years of my career.

I did not leave to start my own company and took some well-deserved time off to answer the question “what DO I want to do?”

I had several offers for recruiting positions and was entertaining joining an executive search firm only 20 minutes from my house. In the interim, clients starting calling my cell asking for my help. When I informed them I was no longer recruiting, I got responses like, “no, you can’t stop recruiting, you’ve staffed our practice for 10+years” and “I don’t want to work with anyone else, you know our office so well” and “you’ve watched our practice grow and you were an integral part of our growth.” I was so moved by these comments and remember thinking, I’ve cultivated relationships with my clients for 17 years and closing that book was kind of sad.

Sooooo, I went for it! I launched Med-Hire in 2015.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, it has been a smooth road. I consider myself extremely lucky that clients sought me out. It’s quite the challenge to build a book of business these days – there is a ton of competition out there.

I’ve had some growing pains along the way, but nothing too terrible.

Please tell us about Med-Hire.
Med-Hire is here to assist medical practices to hire their next employee. We work hard to understand the staffing needs of our clients. It is important to us to visit each practice we work with so we have a better understanding of the dynamics of the office.

We thoroughly screen our candidates to confirm their personal and professional integrity prior to presenting them to an office. We conduct face to face interviews, background checks, drug screens and thorough reference checks.

As a result, Med-Hire enjoys a strong reputation for providing outstanding personnel for local practices.

We staff the following positions…

Clinical: Administrative:
-RN          Practice Administrators
-LPN        HR Managers
-Telephone Triage Nurse            Business Office Managers
-Medical Assistants                     Front Office Coordinators
-Physician Assistants                  Certified Coders and Medical Billers
-Nurse Practitioners                     Surgery Schedulers
-Phlebotomists                             Centralized Schedulers
-Radiology Technicians               HIM Specialists
-Surgical Technicians                  Medical IT

Depending on the position being filled, some practices will look more closely at specific clinical skills, others will be concerned primarily with how this individual will fit in with the team, and still, others will focus on an applicant’s enthusiasm and desire for the position. We take all of this into consideration when interviewing candidates,

With social media and a plethora of job boards available, we must be creative in finding the perfect candidate for our clients and this is what sets us apart.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I spent A LOT of time at the roller skating rink growing up and one day I met a boy who said he wanted to skate with me. I went home and told my parents this OLDER boy wanted to skate with me and you should have seen the look on their faces when I told her how old he was! I was 11 and he was 21.

So my mom and dad go with me to the rink to meet him. He told them that he thought I had great potential and he wanted to teach me how to skate with a partner (think ice dancing)

Just a couple of years later we won 1st place in the Ga State Championship (2 years in a row) AND he became the big brother I never had.

PS – I still skate to this day.
